35 years! – It is a long period for most people but a relatively short time in the history of education. In 1972, Holy Family Canossian College (“HFCC”) was established and received the first batch of girls in a loving family. In 35 years, these girls are now ladies and contributing to society in various ways.

The academic year 2006-07 sees the 35th anniversary of HFCC. 4th November 2006 commenced a series of commemorative events of this joyous year. Both the lovely sunshine and blue sky greeted the guests, parents and girls attending the Blessing of the New Annex of our school by Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun, SDB, which was followed by a mass conducted by the Bishop as well as the impressive exhibitions of students’ works over the weekend. Memories flashed! When the school’s Dedication Day was conducted by Bishop Peter Lei in 1973, I, a F.1 student in Girl Guides uniform, stood in front of Bishop Lei watching the blessing ceremony. 33 years later, now a mother to a girl of 13, standing on the same playground, watched the blessing ceremony of another building of my mother school. Life goes in a circle, things go and come repeating themselves. Will I have the chance to see another school blessing in 35 years? Not sure; but do hope I can!

School work is both serious and vibrant. We saw the hard work of our junior schoolmates via the exhibits, plus their joy and pride as they led their parents and friends through the 27 exhibition rooms. Moreover, we also saw various scenes of lovely families showing parents’ support of their daughters’ studies and work. Is this an extension of the spirit of Holy Family, “United in Love”, to the students’ homes or vice versa? Maybe it just has been working both ways all the time.

Parents joining the Alumnae Association (“AA”)???? On the second day of the Open Day (i.e. 5th November 2006), a couple came to our exhibition room (where we displayed a slide show of the lovely scenes of the various activities of AA over the past years) and asked about joining our association. Assuming that the lady was an alumna, we were overwhelmed when the couple told us their daughter, who left for overseas studies after F.3, had asked them to assist her to join AA via long distance call. As loving and supporting parents, the couple enrolled their daughter, our fellow schoolmate, as a life member of AA. Moreover, they also bought a full set of AA souvenirs for the 35th anniversary, which comprised a set of watches and a plastic holder. Family is a strong tie to people because of love; and HFCC is a mighty tie to all Holy Familians as love is the theme throughout our education.

Walkathon 2006

It was the day for school walkathon at the Peak. I arrived at school around 8:10am. On the way, I saw students in Girl Guides uniform or in red, yellow, white and blue school tee-shirts with their track suits or jeans. They gathered in small groups, chatting happily. Some stayed with their parents. Some parents shook hands with each other. “Hmmmmm……It would be a lovely day.”

At 8:20am, students lined up in columns. There was a short assembly. Sr. Cynthia introduced, Mr. Lau, the chairman of Parent Teacher Association (“PTA”), Mrs. Liu, the vice chairman of PTA, Eva Cheung, our chairlady, and Caterina Chan, our vice chairlady to all. Mr. Lau took the opportunity to express his gratitude to those parents for their participations in the Open Day. We then started off for the Peak.

Upon arrival, we noted there were walkathons run by other organizations. Swiftly, we took pictures and the Walk commenced at around 9:00am. Mrs. Portia Lau, Mrs. Madgalen Wong and AA committee members stayed behind for other alumnae to join till 10:30am and completed the Walk at 11:30am. We took pictures at the finish point for the lovely memories before dismissal.

To conclude, it was good weather, good chatting, relaxing walk and an enjoyable day.

Athletics Meet 2006 - 2007

16 Nov 2006 was just a perfect day for HFCC’s Athletics Meet. The rainy day before was replaced by fine weather and cheers of the girls and teachers.

24 alumnae graduated from different years joined the event, including 9 competing in a 4 x 100 m relay.

When the athletes were trying their best to win glory for themselves and their house in the field and track, the cheering teams of the four houses showed their support with enthusiastic chants and cheers. Their fabulously designed uniforms showed their hard work and devotion. They showed the power of love and unity. They reminded us of ourselves when we were in their age and uniforms, cheering loudly for the same purpose and sharing the same feelings. I remember the lyrics in our school song “We learn to live in unity, in our Holy Family, faith……”, “shoulder to shoulder, our heads lifted high……”

The sweat and laughter in sport days are often part of the sweet memories of school days we cherish most. However, many of us would admit that we do not exercise anymore after leaving school. The figures of the athletes in the field and track reminded us of the pleasure of exercise and the thrills of competitions.

Dear alumnae, would you join the Athletics Meet next year and share the joy we had today?

Vice Chairlady
